June 24-28

2021’s first camping trip was to Half Moon state park in VT. We had great weather, though the last night was a bit hot and breeze-less. Our campsite was a “waterfront” site but did not have direct water access. We were a bit sad about not being able to jump in the pond whenever we wanted to, but lack of direct water access meant we did more adventuring outside of the park.

Lake Bomaseen was right around the corner, which is more of a Lake Champlain’s Mallets Bay sized lake. Think ‘more motorboats, more wind, more waves.’

Glen Lake was even better - a bit smaller, more to “nooks and crannies” to explore, and LOONS! We love loons. There was a pair of them both times we visited and they came up close to the boats. Unfortunately, I did not bring the right lens, so no loon photos. Next time!

My only complaints for the trip was the lack of black flies. Instead of those, we dealt with millions of caterpillars (the gypsy moth kind) - caterpillars falling from trees, climbing all over my tent, making little chrysalis on the tent, and pooping all over us. We THOUGHT the black dirt all over everything was dirt or pollen(?) Turns out it was literal shit. Glad we didn’t know about that until the last day of the trip. We also had deer flies.

I think I would have preferred black flies… ask me again next year.
